As you can imagine, we’re passionate about the many and varied uses of vinegar here at Goulter’s the vinegar people. Vinegar is incredibly versatile and has many health uses for humans and animals. In addition, it also provides a non-toxic and biodegradable alternative to keeping weeds under control. And as consumers become more informed about products they use we’ve seen a clear shift away from chemicals to natural alternatives. In this blog we’ll look at non-toxic weed killer alternatives.
The Glyphosate debate
One of the chemicals that’s gathered much attention the past few years is Glyphosate, the world’s most commonly used herbicide (weed killer). It is also the active ingredient in Roundup, a product that’s widely used throughout New Zealand. Its use has increased sharply over the last two decades with the introduction of GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) crops and pre-harvest spraying (desiccation) on some conventional crops.
The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified glyphosate as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’. They’ve also linked it to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A growing number of countries are banning its use. Despite this, it’s still readily available in New Zealand. The Environmental Protection Authority states that if people take the recommended precautions, risks will be mitigated.
Glyphosate free certification is now available globally
A growing number of people globally are concerned about residual levels of herbicides in their food. So are we and we were excited to learn that companies can now obtain a Glyphosate Residue Free certification.
The organisation behind the certification, The Detox Project, have approved SGS to provide testing to achieve certification against their Standard. SGS are the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. As a result, certification is growing fast in the US and Canadian markets, with over 70 brands and 1500 products already certified. Now that laboratories across North America, Europe and Asia are able to carry out the test, we expect considerable growth. Read the full article here.
The all-natural alternative
Regardless of where you stand in the debate, if given the opportunity, how would you prefer to manage weeds? Wouldn’t you rather use an all-natural, non-toxic and 100% biodegradable product instead of hazardous chemicals?
Goulter’s Weed X natural herbicide is a non-toxic weed killer alternative which you can safely spray around your fruit and veggies.
WeedX Natural Herbicide
WeedX is a powerful and totally natural product that knocks down weeds fast. It does this by using the synergy between two natural acids – acetic acid or vinegar, and citric acid or lemon.
Over the past 4 years we have done many trials with our WeedX herbicide with great success. Trials have shown it is perfect for gardens, in particular for controlling weeds on pathways, border areas and public areas. It also works well on small gorse when it is soft. It is great for weed control in orchards and nurseries and areas being prepared for a vegetable garden or orchard. The soil pH level will be back to normal 24 hours after application.
